Gabriel Is Gone

This will be the final entry for this blog. Gabriel died on Wed. 2012-08-29 at the age of 9 ½ months after a string of epileptic seizures that lasted for about 2 ½ hrs. He never attained the state of shalom on this earth that we had hoped for, so he had to get to heaven to experience it. As one person expressed it to us, the first time his blind eyes would see he would be looking at the face of Jesus.

He was buried on Aug 31^st in a local cemetery near the top of a hill.

We are extremely thankful for all of you who fought the good fight with us, even tho in the end we lost the battle. While I’m glad that Gabriel is in a better place, I grieve over him losing his chance to live out his destiny as a warrior on this earth.

Gabriel is overleden

Dit is de laatste aflevering van dit blog. Op woensdag 29 augustus 2012 is Gabriel overleden op de leeftijd van negen en een halve maand na een serie epileptische aanvallen die twee en een half uur duurde. Op aarde heeft hij niet de sjalom bereikt waar wij zo op hadden gehoopt, dus moest hij naar de hemel om die sjalom te ervaren. Zoals een kennis het zei: toen Gabriels blinde ogen voor het eerst konden zien heeft hij Jezus’ gezicht gezien.

Hij is begraven op 31 augustus op een plaatstelijke begraafplaats boven op een heuvel.

Wij zijn iedereen zeer dankbaar die de goede strijd met ons heeft gestreden, ook al hebben we de slag uiteindelijk verloren. Alhoewel ik blij ben dat Gabriel het nu beter heeft rouw ik erom dat hem de kans is ontnomen om op aarde zijn bestemming als strijder te bereiken.

Condition Holding

Gabriel’s condition is about the same as two weeks ago.

His latest official measurements:

Weight: 5.9 kg (13 lbs)

Length: 63.5 cm (25 inches)

Head: 43 cm (16.9 inches)

So at over 9 months of age, his size is about right for a 4 month old.

Toestand gelijk gebleven

Gabriels toestand is min of meer gelijk gebleven in de afgelopen twee weken.

Zijn laatste officiële metingen:

Gewicht: 5.9 kg

Lengte: 63.5 cm

Hoofdomtrek: 43 cm

Dus met ruim 9 maanden kloppen zijn afmetingen ongeveer met die van een kind van 4 maanden.

Changing Feeding Tubes

A unique sleeping pose

Mama has now succeeded in changing Gabriel’s feeding tube by herself  several times (with papa assigned to taping it down). So far inserting it has proven to be surprisingly easy. With very infrequent doctor appointments now, not making a special trip for this saves a significant amount of time.

Not Getting Stronger

Gabriel continues to get weaker. It shows up now in his weak breathing. He often when breathing also lets out a weak whine with each breath. It’s nearly impossible to figure out what that means, if it is indicating pain or a problem. For weeks now he has not seemed to give any indication of hunger, so we just feed him following what his weight should require, or actually beyond his weight, since he doesn’t absorb as well as healthy babies.

Epilepsy

Despite his weakening state, Gabriel’s epilepsy continues apace. Certain of the types of attacks produce large amounts of saliva. (Presumably that is how you get the foaming at the mouth phenomenon for certain people.) When he gets a string of these, he becomes so congested that one wonders if he can succeed in continuing to breathe. In the hospital they would suction him out. Recently mama has taken to using the mouth-powered suction equipment to suction him out when he gets very congested.

De sonde vervangen

Mama is er een aantal keer in geslaagd zelf Gabriels sonde te vervangen (en daarbij had papa als taak hem vast te plakken). Tot nu toe was het verrassend makkelijk om hem in te brengen. Omdat we maar weinig afspraken in het ziekenhuis meer hebben scheelt het behoorlijk wat tijd om geen speciale ritjes meer te hoeven maken voor een nieuwe sonde.

Niet sterker

Gabriel is nog verder verzwakt. Het is nu vooral te merken aan zijn zwakke ademhaling. Vaak maakt hij een klagend piepgeluidje bij elke ademhaling. Je komt er niet achter wat hij daarmee bedoelt, heeft hij pijn of iets anders? Hij geeft al wekenlang niet meer aan dat hij honger heeft, dus geven we hem maar de hoeveelheid voeding die bij zijn gewicht past, of eigenlijk meer dan bij zijn gewicht past, omdat hij zijn voeding niet zo goed opneemt als gezonde kindjes.

Epilepsie

Ondanks Gabriels verzwakte toestand gaan zijn epilepsieaanvallen onverminderd door. Van sommige soorten aanvallen krijgt hij een grote speekselproductie (ik neem aan dat dat het verschijnsel van schuimbekken veroorzaakt bij sommige mensen). Als hij een hele serie aanvallen krijgt komt zijn keel zo vol te zitten dat je je afvraagt hoe hij nog kan ademhalen. In het ziekenhuis zouden ze in zo’n geval suctie doen. Mama zuigt hem nu als het nodig is uit met een suctieslang met haar mond.

Not Eating or Drinking

Gabriel in Cast

Gabriel is now not able to eat or drink by himself to any extent for lack of strength. So all his milk and food is reaching his stomach via a tube. Obviously his food needs to be strained fine to go thru the small tube, but he continues to get semi-solids as well as mother’s milk.

Castaway

Thankfully Gabriel’s cast was taken off this Thur when x-rays showed that he had added a large amount of bone around the break in his leg. It would seem that with his bones not growing in length his body has plenty to put towards bone repair. Now he can be put into water again to bathe him, and he fits again in his child seat.

 Move to New Medicine

Gabriel’s epilepsy medicine Keppra is now up to the full dosage allowed. His former medicine is being rapidly tapered off. His epilepsy attacks remain at about the same level, however. Possibly he has less of the most severe type, but that is more than likely due to the weakening of his body.

Niet meer eten of drinken

Gabriel is teveel verzwakt om nog zelf te kunnen eten of drinken. Al zijn moedermelk en hapjes bereiken nu zijn maag via de sonde. Zijn hapjes moeten uiteraard zeer fijn worden gezeefd omdat de smalle sonde anders verstopt raakt, maar het lukt.

Gips eraf

Afgelopen donderdag mocht Gabriels gips eraf toen uit de röntgenfoto bleek dat hij een grote hoeveelheid botweefsel rond de breuk had aangemaakt. Nu hij al geruime tijd niet in de lengte is gegroeid heeft hij blijkbaar voldoende over om in het herstel van zijn been te steken. Hij mag nu weer in bad en past weer in het autozitje.

De overgang naar het nieuwe medicijn

Gabriel krijgt nu de maximale dosering van het anti-epilepsimedicijn Keppra. Zijn vorige medicijn is al bijna afgebouwd. Zijn aanvallen komen helaas niet minder vaak, al vermoeden we dat hij minder vaak aanvallen van het ergste soort heeft. (We houden de aanvallen niet meer bij in een tabel dus kunnen we niet objectief zeggen of ze verminderd zijn).
