A Minor Victory (Dutch below)

Not long after the seizures began, we naturally began commanding them to stop in the name of Jesus (and commanding whatever is behind them to leave). What we found was that the commands seemed to shorten the seizures considerably if given right when they started, but seemed to not have much apparent effect if the seizure had been going on for some time. Eventually with this process the seizures got shorter in duration, and now they have tapered off and become rare. It’s possible all this happened by itself, and only coincidentally appeared to be the effect of our commands – I wasn’t able to come up with any definitive test. In any case, we are thankful that the seizures have nearly ceased.

Scream with the Bouncing Ball

The saga with the descending and ascending testicle continues, accompanied by lots of hernia pain. His scrotum is underdeveloped so that when the testicle gets to it, it simply can’t contain the testicle, so it eventually goes up again. All we can do is watch and listen to the screaming and try to comfort him. Clearly what we need prayer for is the scrotum to properly develop. (Yes, all very uncomfortable to discuss, but what can you do?)

Lately he’s been doing another form a screaming. He starts drinking his bottle, and after a few sips gets intestinal pain and begins screaming. Feeding a bottle with screaming after each few sips can take a very long time.

Een kleine overwinning

Elke keer dat Gabriel een toeval heeft bevelen we de toeval (en wat erachter zit) hem in de naam van Jezus te verlaten. Als we er op tijd bij zijn, net wanneer zo’n toeval begint, duurt hij aanzienlijk korter, maar als zo’n toeval al geruime tijd aan de gang is reageert hij nauwelijks op onze bevelen. Uiteindelijk zijn de toevallen korter en minder frequent geworden. Het is ook mogelijk dat de toevallen toevallig minder frequent zijn geworden en dat onze bevelen er niet toe doen. Ik weet niet hoe ik dit objectief kan vaststellen. Maar we zijn hoe dan ook blij dat de toevallen zo goed als opgehouden zijn.

De schreeuw en het balletje dat vreemd kan rollen

Het verhaal van de bal die indaalt en weer opstijgt wordt vervolgd, vergezeld door een hele hoop pijn aan een liesbreuk. Zijn scrotum is onderontwikkeld zodat de testikel er niet in past wanner hij indaalt, en weer terug naar de buikholte gaat, precies over de liesbreuk. We kunnen alleen maar toekijken terwijl hij alles bij elkaar krijst en hem troosten. We moeten dus bidden voor een groter scrotum. (Sorry, het is op het ongepaste af om hierover te schrijven, maar we kunnen er niets aan doen.)

De laatste dagen krijst hij ook om een andere reden. Hij krijgt nu vaak na een paar slokjes van zijn fles last van buikkramp en begint dan te krijsen. Het kan dan vrij lang duren voordat hij zijn fles op heeft.

Seizures (Dutch below)

Just when you think things can’t get any worse, they do. This past week Gabriel began having seizures, ramping up very quickly to multiple seizures per day. They aren’t particularly violent due to his muscles being so weak. His arms and legs will shake, and his waist will be contorted to one side. Sometimes it affects his mouth, an eye and his neck. It frequently interferes with his drinking milk, making him very frustrated.

Healing Conference

At the area healing conference you might say Gabriel became a prayer magnet. We could hardly turn around without another person or group volunteering to pray for him. It was quite extraordinary. Many did some very serious time intervening for him. As we came to the end of the conference, I found myself wondering if any boy in history could have had more hands-on prayer in a four-day time span. I doubt it. If love could have healed him, he should have been healed many times over by the end of those days. And there were definitely people of faith praying for him too. For instance, the head of a healing prayer team at a local church prayed for him with his entourage. One of the big-name speakers also prayed for him a couple of times.

As we watched the people around us being healed left, right and center, not a single one of Gabriel’s ailments appears to have been healed, not even the more minor ones.

I had no plan B if Gabriel didn’t get healed at this gathering. It is the biggest and most powerful event we have any expectation of attending, so it’s hard to know what else to do beyond that. Pray for us as we try to come up with a plan B.

Toevallen

Net als je denkt dat het niet erger kan blijkt dat dus toch te kunnen. Vorige week heeft Gabriel voor het eerst aanvallen gehad die in rap tempo toenamen tot enkele keren per dag. Ze zijn niet zo heftig omdat zijn spieren zo zwak zijn. Zijn armen en benen schudden dan en zijn romp trekt naar één kant. Soms doen zijn mond en ogen ook mee.

Genezingsconferentie in de omgeving

Tijdens de conferentie over genezing werd Gabriel een gebedsmagneet. Er kwamen om de haverklap mensen langs die voor hem wilden bidden. Velen van hen hebben behoorlijk de tijd voor hem genomen. Tegen het einde van de conferentie vroeg ik me af of er ooit in de geschiedenis een jongen meer gebed met handenoplegging heeft gekregen in slechts vier dagen tijd. Als liefde iemand zou kunnen genezen dan zou hij nu allang genezen moeten zijn. En de mensen die voor hem baden hadden wel degelijk geloof. Zo heeft het hoofd van een genezingsteam van een plaatselijke kerk met zijn hele entourage voor hem gebeden. Ook één van de bekende sprekers heeft een paar keer voor hem gebeden.

Ook al werden er overal om ons heen zoveel mensen genezen, toch is er niet één van Gabriels symptomen genezen, zelfs niet één van de minder ernstige symptomen.

Ik had geen alternatief achter de hand voor het geval Gabriel niet tijdens de conferentie zou genezen. Dit is de belangrijkste genezingsconferentie in onze omgeving die wij kunnen bijwonen dus we weten niet wat we nu moeten doen. Bid dat we ideeën voor een plan B mogen opdoen.

Pain

Gabriel has been suffering a lot of pain this last week from his hernia. We have now observed a typical hernia bulge, and Gabriel usually cries when it happens, often for prolonged periods, often making for sleepless nights for him and one of us.

Prayer

Gabriel has been prayed for this past week by a well-known local personality, again with no evident results.

This coming week we plan to take him to an area healing conference. Please pray that this will be the time when the Lord pours out the bowls of healing.

Stiff-Necked

Have you ever wondered where the biblical term “stiff-necked” comes from? I finally figured it out. It comes from a baby who can’t breathe well with his head in one position, and when you go to turn his head to where he can breathe, he stiffens his neck, refusing to let you turn his head to help him. I’m sure the theologians will be eternally grateful to me. Meanwhile, Gabriel has thankfully gotten gradually less and less stiff-necked, and also less and less in need of having his head turned to breathe properly.

 

Unlike most babies, Gabriel’s fontanel is not just a soft spot but a large band on his head, extending between where these fingers are pointing, and at it’s broadest point the width is indicated in the lower picture.

Blind (Dutch Below)

From quite early on we were having discussions about whether or not Gabriel could see. Since he appears to be looking around all the time, and his eyes look fine, I was early on of the opinion that he likely could see.

A couple of weeks ago we began revisiting the topic. We have observed that:

He never focuses on any faces or follows objects (such as a toy)

He doesn’t seem to know when his bottle is coming to his mouth

He gets startled sometimes when you touch him, apparently not seeing you

He likes to look up at the ceiling where there was nothing to see

He has no blinking reflex when you move your hand rapidly towards his eyes

I couldn’t get him to pay attention to the light of a flashlight

The only indicator of any sight is reacting to a camera flash and sunlight

So we decided to have him checked out again, this time being directed to a pediatric ophthalmologist. His tests confirmed that Gabriel is blind, only able to see a bright light.

MRI Shows Nothing

As I should have reported last week, the MRI results came back and showed no brain abnormalities. So that’s one big ordeal that could have been avoided. I guess we should have stuck with our original convictions on it and not bothered with it.

Final Diagnosis: None

The genetic testing produced negatives on Prader-Willi Syndrome and a particular type of Muscular Dystrophy. The doctors gave his disorder a label of a hereditary disease that does not occur in our families (with no genetic testing to back it up). It would seem that this is their way of saying, “We don’t want to pursue any more testing.” It would seem they don’t consider it worth it to spend the money on a complete karyotype test.

Slightly Better Week

Gabriel has still been having fairly frequent bouts of pain, probably from his groin problems. He is getting his milk down, but we are using an extra large hole to accomplish that.

Prayer

We got Gabriel prayed for at one more new church this last Sun. with no evident changes, but plan to get further prayer this week at the same place.

Blind

Wij hebben eigenlijk al vanaf het begin getwijfeld of Gabriel wel kon zien. Aangezien hij de hele tijd rond lijkt te kijken en zijn ogen er normaal uitzien dachten we eerst dat hij wel kan zien. Maar een paar weken geleden hebben we de volgende  feiten eens op een rijtje gezet:

Hij kijkt nooit naar gezichten of speelgoedjes, enz.

Hij ziet de fles niet aankomen als je hem in zijn mond steekt.

Hij schrikt als je hem aanraakt omdat hij je blijkbaar niet ziet.

Hij kijkt de hele tijd naar het plafont terwijl daar niets te zien valt.

Hij knippert niet met zijn ogen als je doet alsof je hem in zijn gezicht slaat.

Hij reageert niet op het licht van een zaklamp.

Het enige bewijs dat hij iets ziet is dat hij reageert op de flits van een fototoestel en op de zon.

Dus we hebben hem laten onderzoeken door een oogarts die gespecialiseerd is in kinderen. Hij bevestigde dat Gabriel blind is en alleen heel fel licht kan zien.

Niets te zien op de MRI

Zoals ik vorige week al had moeten melden is de uitslag van het MRI onderzoek teruggekomen en de hersenen zien er normaal uit. Dus die ellende had hem bespaard gebleven kunnen worden. We hadden eigenlijk vast moeten houden aan onze overtuiging om het niet te laten doen.

Uiteindelijke diagnose: niets

De uitslag van het genetisch onderzoek was negatief voor Prader Willi Syndroom en een bepaalde soort Spierdystrofie. De artsen gaan er nu vanuit dat hij een erfelijke spierziekte heeft die niet bij ons in de familie voorkomt. Het lijkt wel alsof ze ermee willen zeggen: “wij willen geen nader onderzoek meer verrichten”. Misschien vinden ze hem het geld niet waard om een volledige chromosomenanalyse/karyotype analyse te laten doen.

Een iets betere week

Gabriel heeft nog steeds regelmatig last van pijn in zijn lies. Hij drinkt genoeg melk maar daar heeft hij dan wel een speen met extra groot gat XL voor nodig en hij verslikt zich regelmatig.

Gebedsfocus

Dat Gabriels voeten recht worden.

Dat zijn ballen mogen indalen en, als hij een liesbreuk heeft, dat die mag verdwijnen.
