Hernia (Dutch Below)

According to the doctor’s assessment, Gabriel has a hernia, not a descending testicle. He thinks it’s not bad enough to require immediate action. Still, in my judgment, the bulge seems to have a well-defined enough shape that it can only be a testicle. (The bulging didn’t occur in the doctor’s observation.) On the other hand, descending testicles are not supposed to be painful, whereas this is clearly very painful for him, causing him to kick his legs and vigorously exercise his lungs. So which is it? Possibly both. Obviously we need further clarification or just healing.

Not a Great Week

As of this past week Gabriel’s sucking ability sucks. It’s almost as if he has forgotten how to suck. Finishing a bottle can take 45 minutes rather than 15. During that time he very often coughs (mostly his “hernia cough” not a choking cough), and has breathing difficulty. Maybe sucking gives him pain (that’s the optimistic possibility). With first pumping milk and then feeding for so long, mama doesn’t have much time left over for other matters.

To top it all off, with papa off for meetings this week, mama had to put up with all this by herself, catching whatever bits of sleep she could.

Praise

We had to fly Gabriel to the capital city to register his birth and get his passport. We give praise that he was hungry right during take-off and landing so that he relieved the pressure in his ears and didn’t experience ear pain.

Liesbreuk

Volgens de arts heeft Gabriel een liesbreuk, geen indalende teelbal. Hij vindt het niet ernstig genoeg om onmiddellijk in te grijpen. Toch vind ik dat de bobbel duidelijk de vorm heeft van een bal. (De bobbel was niet zichtbaar op het moment dat de arts hem onderzocht.) Aan de andere kant horen indalende testikels geen pijn te doen, terwijl Gabriel duidelijk pijn heeft: hij schopt met zijn beentjes en oefent zijn longetjes behoorlijk. Dus is het nu een liesbreuk of een indalende teelbal? Misschien allebei. We moeten meer duidelijkheid krijgen of gewoon gebed.

Niet zo’n geweldige week

In de afgelopen week is Gabriel slecht gaan zuigen, net alsof hij het zuigen heeft verleerd. Hij doet soms wel 45 minuten over een flesje in plaats van 15. Daarbij hoest hij ook veel (meestal zijn “liesbreukhoestje”, geen verslikkingshoest), en heeft hij moeite met ademhalen. Misschien doet het zuigen hem pijn (maar dat is  optimistisch). Omdat mama eerst moet kolven en daarna lang over het voeden doet heeft ze weinig tijd meer over voor andere zaken.

Daar komt nog eens bij dat papa deze week van huis was in verband met vergaderingen, zodat mama het alleen moest zien te rooien.

Dankpunt

We moesten met Gabriel naar de hoofdstad vliegen om zijn geboorte aan te geven en een paspoort voor hem te laten maken. We zijn de Heer dankbaar dat Gabriel precies tijdens het opstijgen en landen honger kreeg zodat hij zijn oren kon klaren en geen last kreeg van oorpijn.
